Measuring freight emissions honestly
Carbon reporting is now a procurement requirement. What separates a credible number from a marketing one.
Freight emissions reporting has moved from nice-to-have to contractual. The problem is that two providers can report wildly different numbers for the same shipment and both describe themselves as compliant.
The difference is usually scope and method. A credible figure covers well-to-wheel emissions rather than tank-to-wheel alone, and is calculated per shipment from actual weight, distance and mode — not an industry average applied to spend.
Watch for three things: whether empty running is included, whether the figure is built from primary data or modelled, and whether it is verified against a recognised framework such as GLEC. A number that only ever improves without any operational change is a modelling artefact, not progress.
Our position is simple: publish the method alongside the number. If a client cannot reproduce our calculation, it is not a measurement — it is a claim.
